Pension from abroad — tax treatment in Portugal
May 1, 2026Avenida da Liberdade · Experience date Jan 2, 2026
Foreign pensions received in Portugal may be tax-exempt under the NHR regime (pre-2024 rules) or taxed at a flat 10% under the updated 2024 NHR (IFICI) regime. The exact treatment depends on the double-taxation treaty between Portugal and your home country. UK state pension: taxed only in Portugal under the UK-Portugal DTA. US Social Security: has specific rules — consult a specialist. The NHR benefit for pension income is a major draw for retirees, particularly from the UK, US, and Northern Europe.

Mar 6, 2026Baixa · Experience date Dec 28, 2025
Portugal has double-taxation treaties (DTA) with 79 countries including the UK, US, Germany, France, Brazil, Canada, and Australia. These treaties determine where income is taxed and prevent you paying full tax in both countries. Most treaties give Portugal primary taxing rights once you're a Portuguese tax resident. Understanding your DTA is essential if you have foreign income, foreign rental property, or a foreign pension — consult a bilingual tax adviser, particularly before your first Portuguese IRS filing.

SWIFT transfers outside the EU: €15–30 fee at Portuguese banks, Wise is usually cheaper. Millennium BCP and CGD both process SWIFT transfers same-day if submitted before 2pm.
