May 3, 2026Dubai · Experience date Mar 7, 2026
Dubai buses are underused by expats but genuinely good. Air-conditioned, clean, frequent. Route F55 runs from Mall of Emirates to Ibn Battuta (free shuttle). Route 8 runs Deira to Gold Souk. RTA app shows real-time arrivals — actually works. AED 2-3.50 per trip with NOL card. Bus stops have seating in the shade. Good for budget travel if you don't mind 10-20 minutes extra vs Metro.
Careem vs Uber in Dubai — they're basically the same now
Apr 29, 2026Dubai · Experience date Nov 13, 2025
Careem was acquired by Uber but runs as a separate app. Both use the same pricing and often the same drivers. Uber is slightly cheaper at off-peak times, Careem has better customer service if anything goes wrong. Both use official RTA-licensed taxis as 'Careem Hala' and 'Uber Taxi' — these are metered and same price as street taxi. Use taxi option for predictable fare, not surge pricing.

If you have a driving license from UK, USA, Canada, Australia, EU, and 30+ other countries: you can convert to UAE license without taking a test. Process: Dubai Traffic Police, bring original license + Emirates ID + eye test (done onsite, AED 40) + passport photos. Cost: AED 110. Takes 30 minutes. If your country isn't on the exemption list, you'll need to do the full test — 40+ hours of lessons typically, costs AED 3,000-4,000.

Palm Monorail runs from Gateway Towers (connects to Tram) to Atlantis at the top of the Palm. AED 10 one way or AED 18 return. Only useful if you're visiting Atlantis, The Palm hotels, or the Palm area without a car. Atlantis to Gateway: 7 minutes. Not connected to Metro directly (need to take Tram then transfer). Good for tourists, limited use for residents.
