Transport and Mobility

How to get around efficiently with clear cost comparisons.

Share your tip

AI summary · assistance only

You'll find that navigating Istanbul's transport system can be overwhelming, but with the right tools, you'll be moving around the city in no time. Most newcomers rely on the Istanbulkart, a tap-to-pay transit card that works on everything from metro to ferry, which can be purchased on your first day. Watch out for street taxis, as they often scam tourists with detours or false charges, instead opt for BiTaksi, a reliable taxi-hailing app that shows licensed yellow taxis and upfront fare estimates. The M11 metro line is a convenient option from IST Airport to Gayrettepe, taking 35 minutes and costing 42 TL. To get started, head to skdar or any major station to purchase your Istanbulkart today.

The new M11 metro from IST Airport to Gayrettepe takes 35 minutes

Trust L3Updated Apr 16, 2026

IST Airport to Gayrettepe · Experience date Apr 1, 2026

The M11 metro line opened in 2023 and connects IST Airport to Gayrettepe (connection to M2) in 35 minutes for 42 TL. This is dramatically better than the taxi (250–600 TL depending on traffic and destination). Trains run every 15 minutes from 06:00 to midnight. Buy your Istanbulkart at the airport machines on arrival rather than using single-journey tokens.

Ferries are the best way to cross the Bosphorus — avoid the bridges

Trust L3Updated Apr 16, 2026

Eminönü / Karaköy to Kadıköy / Üsküdar · Experience date Apr 5, 2026

Şehir Hatları ferries run from Eminönü and Karaköy on the European side to Kadıköy and Üsküdar on the Asian side, every 15–20 minutes during peak times. Journey is 20–25 minutes. Toll bridges using HGS/OGS tags cost 60–80 TL per crossing — ferries are 14 TL. For commuters living on the Asian side working in Europe, the ferry is faster, cheaper, and far more pleasant than sitting in bridge traffic.

The Metrobüs is the fastest cross-city route but is extremely crowded

Trust L3Updated Apr 16, 2026

European–Asian corridor (TEM route) · Experience date Apr 7, 2026

The Metrobüs runs from Beylikdüzü on the European side all the way to Kadıköy on the Asian side along the TEM motorway. It's the fastest option for this corridor but is brutally crowded during rush hour (07:30–09:30 and 17:00–19:30). Travel with a backpack in front, not behind, to avoid pickpockets. Off-peak it's clean and fast. Istanbulkart is the only payment method.

Bosphorus cruise — tourist vs commuter, what to choose

Dec 30, 2025

Eminönü · Experience date Jan 11, 2026

For sightseeing: full Bosphorus cruise from Eminönü runs twice daily (10:35am and 1:30pm), takes 90 minutes up to the Black Sea and back, costs 250 TRY. For commuting: the regular Şehir Hatları ferries between Eminönü/Karaköy and Kadıköy/Üsküdar offer the same Bosphorus views at commuter prices (17 TRY). The daily commute ferry at 8am is genuinely one of Istanbul's great experiences — tea from the onboard çay stand included in the journey.

Istanbulkart — get it on day one, works on everything

Dec 13, 2025

Üsküdar · Experience date Feb 14, 2026

The Istanbulkart is Istanbul's tap-to-pay transit card covering metro, tram, bus, ferry (vapur), Marmaray, and Metrobüs. Buy at any metro station kiosk for 100 TRY (includes 50 TRY credit). Fares per trip: around 17 TRY. Transfers within 120 minutes are discounted to 8–10 TRY. Much cheaper than paying cash at the turnstile (cash is not accepted on most routes anyway). Rechargeable at vending machines, tobacco shops (bayi), and the İstanbulkart app.

Cycling in Istanbul — European side has some bike lanes, Asian side better

Dec 10, 2025

Taksim · Experience date Mar 6, 2026

Istanbul is not a cycling-friendly city overall. The Asian side has a dedicated coastal bike path from Kadıköy through Moda to Bostancı — flat, scenic, 10+ km. The İSBİKE bike-sharing system operates in both sides with docking stations. Day pass 50 TRY, monthly 200 TRY. European side cycling is difficult — hills and traffic make it dangerous. Never cycle across the Bosphorus Bridge — pedestrians and cyclists are not permitted.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to city — limited metro, Havas bus is main option

Nov 25, 2025

Beşiktaş · Experience date Dec 12, 2025

SAW on the Asian side has no direct metro connection as of 2024. Options: Havas bus to Kadıköy (40 min, 100 TRY) or Taksim (90 min+, 120 TRY), taxi to Kadıköy (250–350 TRY, 30–60 min depending on traffic), or take the Havataş bus to Pendik and connect to Marmaray. If flying into SAW and staying on the Asian side — Havas bus to Kadıköy is straightforward. For European side: budget extra time.

Istanbul traffic — when to avoid roads and bridges

Nov 20, 2025

Şişli · Experience date Feb 18, 2026

Istanbul has some of the worst traffic in the world. Avoid all bridges and major arteries 7:30–9:30am and 5:00–8:00pm weekdays. The Bosphorus bridges (15 Temmuz and Fatih Sultan Mehmet) jam completely — add 60–90 minutes to any crossing at peak times. Use ferry for Bosphorus crossings whenever possible. Google Maps traffic data is accurate for Istanbul — always check before getting in a taxi for a crosstown trip.

Dolmuş — shared minibuses that fill the gaps

Nov 10, 2025

Kadıköy · Experience date Mar 13, 2026

Dolmuş are shared minibuses following fixed routes, departing when full. Fare is cash only, 15–25 TRY per trip depending on route length. They fill gaps the main metro/tram network doesn't reach — particularly useful in Kadıköy for reaching Moda, in Beşiktaş for coastal routes, and on the Asian side for Üsküdar backstreets. Ask locals which dolmuş to take — routes aren't always marked clearly. Wave one down on the roadside.

Ferry to Princes' Islands (Adalar) — weekend escape from the city

Nov 9, 2025

Beşiktaş · Experience date Apr 21, 2026

The Princes' Islands are 9 car-free islands 30 minutes by ferry from Kabataş. Ferries run hourly in summer, every 2 hours in winter. Return ticket: 70 TRY with Istanbulkart. Büyükada is the largest island with Ottoman wooden mansions and horse carriages. Rent a bicycle for 200 TRY/day. Great day trip any time of year. Book ferry tickets online at sehirhatlari.istanbul on summer weekends — boats fill up.
