Best SIM Plans for Newcomers in Dubai

How to compare setup fees, coverage, and monthly data costs.

Action checklist

Complete these steps in order for the fastest, safest setup.

  • 1Choose between du and Etisalat (e&) — both are solid, du is slightly cheaper for data
  • 2Buy at the airport only if urgent — city shops (Mall of Emirates, City Centre) have more plan options
  • 3Bring your passport — required for registration, no exceptions
  • 4For tourist stays under 30 days: du Tourist SIM (~35 AED, 10GB) or Etisalat Visitor SIM (~40 AED)
  • 5For residents: postpaid plans start at 100 AED/month and require Emirates ID
  • 6Check if your employer offers corporate SIM deals — many companies provide subsidised plans

du vs Etisalat (e&) — which to pick

du: better urban data speeds, competitive pricing, popular with expats. Plans from 35 AED (tourist) to 150 AED/month (resident postpaid with 30–50GB). Etisalat (e&): slightly stronger coverage in remote areas and northern emirates. Similar pricing. Better for those who travel outside Dubai frequently. For city-based newcomers: both work equally well. Pick du if price is the priority.

Price guide (2025)

Tourist SIM (30 days): 35–55 AED — includes 10–20GB data, local calls Prepaid resident SIM: 89–120 AED/month — 20–30GB data Postpaid resident plan: 100–200 AED/month — unlimited local calls + 30–100GB Activation fee: 50 AED (one-time, most plans) Note: VoIP calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime audio) are restricted on UAE networks.

Registering a foreign phone

If you bring your own device, it must be registered with the TDRA within 60 days or it will be blocked. Registration is free via the TDRA website or the telecom's app. Most modern phones (iPhone, Samsung flagships) are already compatible — older or parallel-import devices may need an IMEI check first.

City context: Dubai

These steps are tailored for newcomers in Dubai. Costs, availability, and requirements may differ in other cities — switch the city selector above to switch context.
