Work Contract Checklist for Newcomers

Practical checks before accepting an offer or signing a contract.

Action checklist

Complete these steps in order for the fastest, safest setup.

  • 1Confirm the contract is a MOHRE (Ministry of Human Resources) standard contract — not just an offer letter
  • 2Check: basic salary vs total package — housing, transport, and medical allowances should be listed separately
  • 3Verify probation period: legally capped at 6 months in the UAE
  • 4Check notice period: typically 1–3 months, must match both employer and employee obligations
  • 5Confirm annual leave entitlement: 30 calendar days after one year of service
  • 6Verify end of service gratuity terms — UAE law guarantees gratuity after 1 year of service
  • 7Never pay a recruitment or visa fee to your employer — illegal under UAE law

UAE labour law basics

The UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021) governs all private sector employment. Key protections: End of service gratuity: 21 days' basic salary per year for first 5 years, 30 days per year after that Annual leave: 30 calendar days after completing 1 year (2 days/month for first year) Public holidays: 11–13 days per year (check MOHRE calendar annually) Overtime: 25% above normal hourly rate (50% for late night and Friday overtime) Unlawful termination: compensation of up to 3 months' salary

Red flags in contracts

Salary only listed as 'total package' with no breakdown — demand a clear breakdown of basic salary vs allowances. Gratuity is calculated on basic salary only. Non-compete clause covering all UAE — overly broad non-competes are rarely enforceable but can create friction when changing jobs. Visa type not specified — confirm whether it is a standard employment visa or a freelance/investor visa. No mention of medical insurance — employers are legally required to provide health insurance in Dubai.

If your employer asks you to pay visa fees

This is illegal. Under UAE law, employers must bear all costs of the employment visa, medical test, and Emirates ID. If asked to pay, report to MOHRE via the Tasheel app or call 800-60. Document all communications in writing.
